Associations between adipocyte diameter and liver steatosis
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the clinical challenges related to the classification of patients with elevated body mass index, preclinical obesity and clinical obesity according to the definitions proposed in 2025 by the Lancet Commission.
- Describe the association between adipocyte diameter and liver fat accumulation in patients with severe obesity.
- Recognize the potential utility of non-invasive tools, such as transient elastography, for screening preclinical obesity.

Dr Audrey St-Laurent holds a M.Sc in kinesiology and a Ph.D in nutrition. Since the end of her graduate studies in 2024, she has been working at the Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec – Université Laval as a research professional in the bariatric medicine team supervised by Dr Fannie Lajeunesse-Trempe. Dr. St-Laurent co-leads the design and implementation of a data registry in bariatric medicine at this institute enabling prospective collection of clinical, biochemical and genetic data among hundreds of new patients each year. Dr St-Laurent is actively involved in ongoing projects related to liver health in various ethnic populations with cardiometabolic risk factors. Dr St-Laurent also makes significant contributions to the training of undergraduate, graduate and medical students. Over the years, Dr St-Laurent has developed a collaborative network that includes academic, community and research partners, enhancing the impact of the work she is involved in.
